| Indications: |
For the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in baby pigs. May also be used in other species such as calves, lambs, and puppies under the direction of a veterinarian. |
| Route: | Intramuscular injection only. Deep intramuscular injection is critical. |
| Administration Site: | |
| Piglets: | Inject in the neck muscle (semispinalis capitis) behind the ear. Avoid injection into the ham or loin muscles to prevent permanent staining and tissue damage. |
| Dosage: | Dosage is based on body weight and the severity of anemia. |
| The following is a general guideline: | |
| Piglets: | 1 ml (100 mg iron) per piglet. A single dose is usually sufficient. Administer at 13 days of age. |
| Other Species (Calves, Lambs, etc.): | 2 4 ml per 100 lb (45 kg) body weight, as determined by a veterinarian. Do not exceed 10 ml per injection site. |
| Important: | Use a sterile needle of appropriate length to ensure deep intramuscular delivery. Change the needle between animals to prevent infections. |
| Contraindications: |
Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to iron dextran. Do not use in animals with evidence of noniron deficiency anemia (e.g., hemolytic anemia). Do not administer intravenously or subcutaneously. |
| Warnings & Precautions: |
1. For animal treatment only. Not for human use. 2. Anaphylactic reactions, which can be fatal, may occur. Have epinephrine available for emergency use. 3. In piglets, a small amount of transient staining at the injection site is common. Improper injection technique can cause severe reactions, including lameness, tissue necrosis, and abscess formation. |
| Withdrawal Period: | Meat 28 days. Do not use in piglets intended for slaughter within 28 days of injection. |
| Adverse Reactions: |
May include vomiting, lethargy, muscle tremors, and shock in case of overdose or hypersensitivity. Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, discoloration) may occur. |
| Overdose: | Overdose is dangerous and can lead to acute iron toxicity, characterized by shock, lethargy, and death. Strictly adhere to the recommended dosage. |
| Storage: |
Store at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F 86°F). Protect from freezing and direct light. A slight darkening of the solution upon storage may occur without affecting potency. However, do not use if the solution contains precipitate or appears cloudy. |
