Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. it acts by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomalsubunit, inhibiting protein synthesis. it is active against a range of Gram-positive andGram-negative bacteria and Mycoplasma. Cross-resistance with oxytetracycline mayoccur.
It is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with high bioavailability less affected byfood.
lt penetrates tissues well, is widely distributed, and maintains effective blood levels fora prolonged period. Protein binding in pigs is approximately 93%.Indications:
For the treatment of infections in pigs and chickens caused by susceptible Gram-positiveand Gram-negative bacteria and Mycoplasma, including : Colibacillosis, Salmonellosis.Pasteurellosis, Mycoplasmal respiratory diseases
Dosage and Administration
Administer in drinking water for 3-5 consecutive days.
Pigs: 125 -250 mg per litre of water.
Chickens: 1.5 g per litre of water.
Contraindications
Do not use in laying hens. Do not administer to animals hypersensitive to tetracyclines.
Adverse Reactions
Prolonged use may result in superinfections and liver injury.Precautions:
Do not administer concurrently with feeds high in calcium content.
Withdrawal Period
28 days for meat.
