Pharmacological Action
Tetracycline antibiotic. It acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, interfering with the formation of the initiation complex between RNA and mRNA, and preventing peptide chain elongation, thus inhibiting protein synthesis. This rapidly suppresses bacterial growth and reproduction. It is primarily effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria may develop cross-resistance with other tetracyclines.
Indications: Tetracycline antibiotic. Used to treat diseases caused by Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, and Chlamydia in livestock and poultry.
Dosage and Administration:
Dosage based on Oxytetracycline: 50 mg per kg of body weight, mixed in drinking water, administered once daily for 3 to 5 days.
Adverse Effects:
Prolonged use may lead to superinfections and liver damage.
Precautions:
(1) Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. Do not administer concurrently with preparations containing calcium, iron, or other metal ions.
(2) Avoid concomitant use with strongly alkaline substances.
(3) Do not use in animals with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
(4) Use with caution; avoid prolonged use.
