Ivermectin is effective against both endo- and ectoparasites, particularly arthropods and nematodes. It is primarily used to remove gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, and ectoparasites in animals such as pigs. Its anthelmintic mechanism involves stimulating the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from presynaptic neurons, thereby opening GABA-mediated chloride channels. The chloride influx reduces cell membrane resistance, causing a slight depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane resting potential, which disrupts neuromuscular signal transmission. This leads to paralysis and death or expulsion of the parasite.
